Swimming Energetics of Striped Bass (morone Saxatilis) and Bluefish (pomatomus Saltatrix): Hydrodynamic Correlates of Locomotion and Gill Ventilation

چکیده
1. Swimming patterns of striped bass and bluefish were monitored using a miniature accelerometer to record instantaneous acceleration and instantaneous deceleration during tail-thrusts over a wide range of swimming speeds. In addition, ventilatory excurrent flow patterns were visualized in swimming striped bass by injecting milk via a buccal catheter. 2. Both species accomplish steady swimming with both symmetric and asymmetric thrusts; other transient swimming patterns were observed as well. 3. Over the transition range from active branchial to ram gill ventilation, no measurable change in forward acceleration amplitude occurred with adoption of ram gill flow in both species; this can only occur if drag does not change over the ventilatory transition. 4. From metabolic measurements and from implications about swimming drag deduced from acceleration amplitude, the cost of active ventilation just prior to adoption of ram gill ventilation was estimated to be 8-i % and 8-4% of total metabolism for striped bass and bluefish respectively. 5. Ventilatory effluent flow patterns during cyclic ventilation in swimming striped bass induce substantial turbulence and probably boundary layer separation. Flow patterns during ram ventilation result in streamlined flow over most of the length of the fish. 6. The results show that transfer from active to branchial to ram gill ventilation provides important hydrodynamic advantages to these fishes at cruising velocities.

Comparative visual function in four piscivorous fishes inhabiting Chesapeake Bay.
Maintaining optimal visual performance is a difficult task in photodynamic coastal and estuarine waters because of the unavoidable tradeoffs between luminous sensitivity and spatial and temporal resolution, yet the visual systems of coastal piscivores remain understudied despite differences in their ecomorphology and microhabitat use. We therefore used electroretinographic techniques to describ...
متن کاملA molecular genetic investigation of the population structure of Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus)
Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) is an ecologically and economically important species along the U.S. East Coast. As a filter-feeder and key prey fish, it provides a critical link between primary production and larger piscivorous predators, such as striped bass (Morone saxatilis), bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix), and weakfish (Cynoscion regalis). The commercial fishery for Atlantic menhad...
متن کاملScaling Acoustic Telemetry of Bluefish in an Estuarine Observatory: Detection and Habitat Use Patterns
—We telemetered adult bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix via a fixed estuarine hydrophone array to assess estuarine habitat use and determine the feasibility of using this approach coastwide. Eighteen bluefish (286–622 mm fork length) were surgically implanted with ultrasonic tags transmitting at either 2-s or 5-s intervals. The fish were monitored during their stay within a temperate estuary by hydr...

—The lower Chesapeake Bay and coastal ocean of Virginia serve as an important nursery area for bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix. Describing the diet composition of young-of-the-year (hereafter, age-0) bluefish in this region is essential to support current Chesapeake Bay ecosystem modeling efforts and to contribute to the understanding of the foraging ecology of these fish along the U.S. Atlantic c...
متن کاملAllometric scaling of maximal enzyme activities in the axial musculature of striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum).
It had been suggested that the activity of anaerobic enzymes in the white muscle of fish increases exponentially with body size to meet the increasing hydrodynamic costs of burst swimming. We tested whether this relationship holds across a very large size range of striped bass, spanning a nearly 3,000-fold range in body mass. We examined the scaling of marker enzymes of anaerobic (lactate dehyd...
